Winter markets in Shrewsbury

December sees the return of the monthly Shrewsbury Farmers and Made in Shropshire markets, bringing a plethora of Shropshire based artists, craftspeople and food producers to our town. The annual Chronicle Christmas Market will also be bringing festive cheer to Shrewsbury. Look out for delicious mince pies and steaming mulled wine, or be tempted by the best locally produced food, hand-made crafts and gifts from local makers and traders.

Head to Shrewsbury's Market Hall for the last Festive Late Night of the year. Shop the market's collection of unique independent stalls from quality gifts, cards, stationery and home interiors to original art, handcrafts and vintage finds. Grab a bite to eat at one of the market's many raved about cafes and street food venues or relax with a glass of wine or a gin cocktail.

Christmas Tree Festival at St Chad's

St Chad's Church, December 5 – January 6

St Chad's spectacular Christmas Tree Festival returns with 40 trees illuminating the famous circular nave.

Each tree is sponsored and decorated by a local business or charity and will remain in place through the New Year and Epiphany.

Viewing is free. St Chad's is open daily with a number of services run during the Christmas season.

University Centre Shrewsbury's Carol Service

St Chad's Church, December 12

Members of the public are invited to join voices with University Centre Shrewsbury staff and students at the institution's third annual carol service.

Some of the traditional carols to be sung at the service will include Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Little Town of Bethlehem and Oh Come, All Ye Faithful.

Readings will also be given by staff and students from UCS, as well as members of the community.

Carols in the Square

Shrewsbury Town Square, December 18

Celebrate Christmas in Shrewsbury at the annual Carols in the Square. Get in the festive mood singing carols including Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night and Away in a Manger.

The event will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Shropshire with Eric Smith from 6.05pm.

Old Market Hall, December 17  24

Watch the 1984 classic in one of Shrewsbury's most iconic buildings.

Filmed on location in Shrewsbury, Ebenezer Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas when the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future teach him to open his heart to the joys of family and friends.

Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, December 21 – 22

The 1984 classic, A Christmas Carol, starring George C Scott, was filmed on location in Shrewsbury.

Explore the streets and buildings that were used in the making of the film during one of Shrewsbury's guided tours.
