Local boy Paul Hendy gets ‘The Last Laugh’

Eric Morecambe once wrote ‘Life’s not Hollywood, it’s Cricklewood’ but perhaps in this case that should read ‘Hollinswood’ as Telford born writer and director Paul Hendy has just scooped a prestigious award at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival.

Best known for his television work, Shropshire born Paul rose to fame presenting shows such as ‘The Disney Club’, ‘Don’t try this at home’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’. Recently though Paul will be better known to county residents as writer and producer of Theatre Severn’s pantomimes, a great supporter of the shows he can often be seen in the winter months visiting the venue.

Paul latest project ‘The Last Laugh’, a short film written and directed by himself, has focusing on three comedy greats, Eric Morecambe (Bob Golding), Tommy Cooper (Damian Williams), and Bob Monkhouse (Simon Cartwright) as they meet in a theatre dressing room, and discuss, comedy, life and everything in between.

‘The Last Laugh’ was awarded the coveted ‘Best Comedy Drama’ award by the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards, who are dedicated to celebrating creative work from all around the world. They arrange special screenings to give American audiences a chance to see films from other countries and cultures, and pride themselves on promoting and celebrating new talents. Paul’s film was chosen this month to be a part of the group’s illustrious line up.

But does this mean Paul will be abandoning Shropshire for California? Not at all, Paul and the rest of the team at Evolution Pantomimes are already working hard on bringing this year’s pantomime ‘Cinderella’ to Theatre Severn.

Last year’s pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’ sold over 38,000 tickets and tickets for this year’s pantomime are already in high demand. With lots of surprises in store, ‘Cinderella’ promise to be the venues most magical pantomime ever, and over half of the tickets for the entire run have already been sold.

Venue spokesman Pip Bayley said ‘Anyone who has been to see one of Evolutions pantomimes over the past five years will know Paul’s writing is hilarious, it’s wonderful that he has now been recognised by Hollywood. Paul has shown us the script for Cinderella and its brilliant!  With Brad Fitt returning to direct and star, we know this year’s show is going to be something very special indeed.’

‘The Last Laugh’ is due to be screened at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival later this month. Cinderella runs at Theatre Severn from 30 November – Sun 08 January. Demand for tickets is always high so the venue are advising booking early.  Tickets are available by visiting the venues website or by contacting the Box Office on 01743 281 281.
