Shropshire’s library services continue ‘book of the month’ partnership with BBC Radio Shropshire

Shropshire Council’s libraries service is to continue working with BBC Radio Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Council’s libraries service in 2017 on the BBC Radio Shropshire Book of the Month.

This partnership will see the local BBC station broadcasting good news stories from libraries, highlighting the wide variety of groups which people can take part in, plus events and resources available, as well as showcasing talented authors, storytellers and artists who work in this area.

Book of the Month titles for 2017 are:

Five Rivers Met on a Wooded Plain – Barney Norris – February

Mister Memory – Marcus Sedgwick – March

The English Girl – Katherine Webb – April

The Trouble With Sheep and Goats – Joanna Cannon – May

Nina is not OK – Shappi Khorsandi – June

Lie With Me – Sabine Durrant – July

The Essex Serpent – Sarah Perry – August

The One in a Million Boy – Monica Wood – September

My Name is Leon – Kit De Waal – October

Their Finest – Lissa Evans – November

The French Lesson – Hallie Rubenhold – December

Listen out for the Book of the Month by tuning into Adam Green and Vicki Archer’s show on BBC Radio Shropshire from 3pm to 7pm throughout the week, on 96FM or at bbc.co.uk/radioshropshire.

Neil MacInnes, President of Society of Chief Librarians, said:

“We are really pleased to be working with BBC local radio. We hope this will encourage people to read more and talk about books more. Libraries provide information that enables people to change their lives: improve health, find a job, upgrade skills, learn a new language, travel, learn a new skill, share in the digital world, open a business and succeed in education. We hope this will encourage more people to come to their libraries and see the range of services they offer such as digital access and information about health and financial issues.”

Stuart West, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said:

“This partnership is a perfect opportunity to show how libraries have transformed over the years and how varied this service is. I hope Shropshire listeners will enjoy being part of it and that it will inspire them to go and see what is available at their local library.”

Councillor Liz Clare, Cabinet member for leisure services and culture, Telford and Wrekin Council:

“This is a brilliant partnership with BBC Radio Shropshire that, in addition to promoting a love of reading and borrowing books, will also show the wide variety of library services available for people of all ages. From e-books and e-magazines, to children’s activities and the Home Library Service.”
