Compassionate Town Workshop: What can poetry teach us about Compassion?

About

Darwin wrote towards the end of this life;

Sympathy beyond the confines of man, that is, humanity to lower animals, seems to be one of the latest moral acquisitions …  This virtue, one of the nobles with which man is endowed, seems to arise incidentally from our sympathies becoming more tender and more widely diffused until they extend to all sentient beings.

Professor Patrick Pietroni from The Darwin International Institute for the Study of Compassion will outline how “acts of compassion” can result in the strengthening of resilience and community development.  A reading of selected poems can often illustrate this better than an academic presentation.

Drawing on his work as Mental Health Director - Shropshire Council, Patrick will, with the help of poetry readings from the audience, explore how compassion can emerge as a force for good in Shrewsbury and beyond.
