About

Visit the world's first iron framed building, the grant-parent of the modern skyscraper, currently undergoing a £30m regeneration.

The Flaxmill Maltings site contains three grade one listed buildings, including the World's first, third and eighth iron-framed structures. It was built in 1797 as a flax spinning mill, operating for 90 years and closing in 1887 to re-open in 1897 as a maltings. It again operated for 90 years in this role before closing in 1987.

The Visitor Centre will be open to the public to learn more about the structures and their uses over two centuries.

On Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th guided tours will be available at regular intervals throughout the weekend, and there will be interpretation and displays on the history, structure and uses of the buildings. In addition there will be an art exhibition, child friendly activities and other displays and entertainment during the weekend of the 8th and 9th only.

Max 20 people per tour/session. About 1 hour (available 8th & 9th of September only)
