Late Victorian and Edwardian Science Fiction

Late Victorian and Edwardian Science Fiction

About

The nineteenth century saw major advances in science and technology. These in turn gave rise to great hopes but also to dire fears which we can see expressed in the literature of the period. Science fiction as a distinct genre focusing on space travel, future wars, utopias and dystopias emerges at this time. The course will trace the development of science fiction in the late Victorian and Edwardian period and will discuss writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells among others. This is a literature course and a reading list will be provided.

The course is a sequel to earlier ones on late Victorian and Edwardian detective fiction and ghost stories but is entirely free-standing and welcomes new students as well as returners.

A six week course with tutor Philip Healy. Sessions run from 2.00pm - 3.30pm. The course takes place on Mondays from 31 January 2022 (31 Jan, 7 Feb, 14 Feb, 28 Feb, 7 March, 14 March 2022)
