Wenlock and The Modern Olympics

About

2016 is Olympic Year and the Rio Games kick off on 5th August. Join the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery in the build-up up to the Games and explore Shropshire’s unique connection with the Olympics. The London2012 Games mascot was called Wenlock to honour the link. In 1850 Much Wenlock doctor William Penny Brookes started the Wenlock Olympian Games which later inspired French baron De Coubertin to revive the Olympics in Athens. Among the exhibits are four original Wenlock trophies which have been returned to Shropshire from Zimbabwe.
