A Town That Bucks the National Trend

While many high streets across the country are struggling to hold onto their independents, Shrewsbury does things differently.

New data from Beauclair shows that 51% of customer spending in Shrewsbury is with independent businesses. That’s compared to a UK average of just 29%! It's a remarkable figure that proves local people - and visitors - are choosing to shop small and shop smart.

Over the past year alone, more than 20 new independents have opened their doors in our town centre. That’s 20 new reasons to explore, discover, and support our ever-evolving high street.

It's About the People

Products and profits alone don't create a thriving independent retail culture - it's about the passionate people behind the counters.

Pollyanna Williams, owner of Snoop on Wyle Cop, says the town’s indie spirit was exactly why she chose to open her business here.

There’s nothing better than being part of such a wonderful community of fellow small businesses, which make the town thrive. We may be biased but Shrewsbury definitely has the best customers!

And then there’s Andrew Prow of Halon Menswear on the High Street - a business that’s been part of Shrewsbury's indie retail scene since 1951.

“We offer specialist products, keen prices, and a level of customer service that’s built on generations of trust and knowledge,” says Andrew. “Our building has had a commercial use since 1780 - with parts dating back even further. We’re proud to be part of the town’s living history.”

Share the Love this Independents Day

Here at Original Shrewsbury, we don't need a special day to shout about independent businesses - we do it all year round! But if it's been a while since you showed your local indie some love - or even if you're new to independent shopping and looking to get to know your locals - then this is the perfect weekend to head out into town, explore, buy yourself something nice, and share the love on social media.

Don't forget to use the hashtag #OriginalShrewsbury!
