About this event

Forging Fraternity in Late Medieval Society

Join medieval historian Dr Rachael Harkes at Shropshire Archives as she explores what it meant to be a member of the Ludlow guild, the communities that the guild created, and how the guild came to be politically important in Tudor Wales and England.

The Palmers’ Guild of Ludlow was one of the premier institutions of the Middle Ages, with over 18,000 known members in the 15th and 16th centuries. It left behind an extraordinary archive – housed in Shropshire Archives – that details the lived experiences of women and men across Wales and England.

This talk will explore what it meant to be a member of the Ludlow guild, the communities that the guild created, and how the guild came to be politically important in Tudor Wales and England. Attendees be given a guided talk through a selection of medieval documents from the guild’s archive.
