The Shropshire Mermaid: A Mystery in the River

Shrewsbury is full of folklore and spooky stories, but did you know the town is home to its own mermaid?

Perhaps a relative of local River Goddess Sabrina, perhaps a cousin of Jenny Greenteeth, the Shropshire Mermaid is said to inhabit the depths of the River Severn.

Over hundreds of years, she has been seen in Shrewsbury only a few times, usually by fishermen and travellers. Such visions are fleeting and hard to prove – a flash of scales and long hair, a pale figure passing beneath a rower's oar...

Historically, her rare appearances have been seen as bad omens, with sightings often coming before flood or disaster struck the town.
