Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings was painstakingly restored at a cost of around £28m, and opened to the public in 2022.
Since then, it's become one of Shropshire's most beloved attractions. The site is home to eight historic buildings, each with a unique story to tell – including the 1797 Main Mill, which – as the first iron-framed building in the world – is the grandparent of skyscrapers.

The judges said that the Flaxmill project, by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, represented “an exemplar of sustainable refurbishment to support the next 100 years of use for a building with a particularly innovative design heritage... It raises the ambition for the whole sector of sustainable re-use for historical buildings, which is of national importance.”
The RIBA West Midlands Award winners will also be considered for the prestigious RIBA National Award, announced in July.
