Christmas Light Switch On 2026

Frequently asked questions

What time does it start, and when do the lights go on?

The festivities begin at 4.30pm in the Square, with a programme of free family entertainment leading up to the big switch-on at 6.30pm. (Exact times TBC for 2026, but these have been consistent for the last few years!)

Where does it take place?

The main stage and countdown are in The Square. Activity has spread across town in recent years: in 2025 Santa and his sleigh greeted families at the bottom of Pride Hill, while Alan Stokes Funfair brought children’s fairground rides to Shoplatch.

Is it free? Do I need a ticket?

Yes, it’s free and there’s no ticket. Just turn up.

Are there road closures?

Road closures are typically in place from 4.30pm to 8.00pm on Wyle Cop (inbound), High Street, Princess Street and Shoplatch, and The Square will be closed to all traffic from 8.00am.

Where can I park?

For the Christmas lights switch-on, we’d recommend Abbey Foregate or Frankwell car parks. Parking is free in all of them from 6pm, so you’ll only pay for the first hour and a half (around £1–2).

Oxon and Harlescott Park and Ride services are also available, and will run every 20 minutes from 5:00 pm until 9:40 pm, picking up on Barker Street.

Can I bring my dog?

We’d suggest leaving dogs at home. It gets very crowded and loud, especially around the countdown. However, dogs who don't mind loud noise and crowds are welcome!
