About this event

Late Victorian and Edwardian Humorists

Queen Victoria, famously, was not amused. Her subjects, and those of her son, Edward VII, were not so constrained. In this world of pomp and circumstance, we also discover some of Britain’s finest humorists, whether in the literary, the graphic or the musical arts.

During this course, we will try and identify that evanescent quality which is humour in the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan, the songs of the music halls, the cartoons of Punch, the caricatures of Max Beerbohm, and two comic novels: Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat (1889) and George & Weedon Grossmith’s The Diary of a Nobody (1892).

A 6-week course to discover some of Britain’s finest humorists in the literary, graphic and musical arts with tutor Philip Healy.
