Pride Hill is the epicentre of Shrewsbury’s retail experience. From health and beauty to fashion, homeware to toys, Pride Hill is fit to burst with all your favourite big names. Located off Pride Hill is The Darwin Centre, Shrewsbury’s largest shopping centre. This multi-level mall houses within it countless shops and cafes, including high street fashion, food and drink, health, and beauty, as well as endless independents.
Notable history
Pride Hill has been here since medieval times, but has not always had this name. Historically, the neighbourhood was called Altus Vieus (High Town), and Pride Hill started as an informal name first recorded in 1378, reflecting the fact that the Pride family lived in the area. The Prides were influential merchants in the wool trade and were recorded as owning 47 plots in the town in 1279. Sections of the Medieval Town Walls lie under many of the buildings on Pride Hill, you can view the original walls within Pret a Manger, and from nearby Raven Meadows.
