Green award for eco-friendly salon

A Shrewsbury business which is bidding to be most eco-friendly hair salon in the region has recently been presented with an award.

Toni & Guy in Castle Street has just received a silver standard certificate in the Green Achiever scheme as a result of its first audit.

The initiative offers environmental accreditation to UK businesses looking to boost their green credentials and reduce their environmental impact.

“We were really pleased with our silver award and are now working hard to achieve the gold standard,” said Gavin Pulham, owner of Toni & Guy.

His salon is aiming to be as environmentally aware as possible and is even putting trimmed hair to good use.

“The team of staff here have reviewed all aspects of the salon's everyday operation to ask it is as green as possible. We have always recycled foils, colour tubes and bottles - this is particularly important as they are harmful to the environment,” he explained.

“Most of our general waste is also being recycled and we responsibly dispose of all paper, plastic, glass, cardboard and batteries.

“We no longer put any excess chemicals down the sink - they are collected, weighed, monitored and disposed of safely at the recycling centre.

“A friend mentioned that hair makes great compost so customers' hair clippings and other biodegradable waste are now being sent to be used on a local farmer’s field in Arscott, meaning even less waste sent to landfill.

“I think we are the only salon in Shropshire to be doing this but it would be great if others would follow suit.”

Toni & Guy in Shrewsbury, which is run as a locally-owned franchise of the international brand, will also soon be offering eco refills on label.m shampoos and conditioners.

Gavin continued: “This encourages customers to recycle and improve their awareness and we are finding that the salon team are all enthused by my passion for making a real contribution to the environment.”

He said that she was now taking suggestions from colleagues and customers about other environmental improvements the salon could achieve.

“We want to become as sustainable as possible so are looking at introducing other green initiatives,” he added.
