Meet The Team

Carl Huntley, Chief Executive: BA(Hons), DipArch(Dist), RIBA
Carl formed Base Architects in 2003 after 10 years of working for a mix of UK and International Architectural Practices. Previous experience yielded project budgets up to £3 billion and incorporated the majority of Western Europe and the UK. He specialises in sustainable Architecture, Masterplanning and challenging projects which require close attention and a sensitive Town Planning approach. Carl has grown the Practice organically, building a strong team around him that can deliver a wide range of Architectural solutions from both Shrewsbury and Chester offices.
Harry Reece, Managing Director: FdSc, ACIAT
Harry joined Base Architects in 2010 after 7 years experience with an internationally recognised Architectural Practice. Harry has extensive experience in the design and construction of both domestic and commercial schemes through to public sector work exceeding £50m + Harry’s role within the Practice is from the project enquiry / fee bidding stage of works for both Shrewsbury and Chester offices, working through the initial design, procurement, construction and Contract Administration phases. He has extensive experience in both detailed design solutions and alternative design options having worked on and managed several award winning schemes within the Practice, one of which resulted in being nominated at a national level in 2015. Harry alongside Bryn Jones leads on the development of the new Chester office which was established in 2017 to serve our growing client base. Having a strong understanding of project viability and deliver-ability, Harry is able to advise Clients on the best development routes and options on an individual scheme by scheme basis. This area of work often results in Harry regularly working with a variety of Agents, private clients and developers alike, to review options at an early stage in preparation for detailed applications. He is enthusiastic towards the challenges of each individual scheme as well as meeting the requirements of today’s evolving stringent legislation with use of modern building technologies.
Bryn Jones, Associate Director
Bryn joined Base Architects in 2012 to support the Practice’s continued growth and is primarily responsible for project management planning and workflow allocation / monitoring. He works closely with the Design team supplying them with up to date information regarding the status of each project and newly commissioned works. Prior to joining Base Bryn has had a varied background in both the manufacturing sector and local and national Economic Development organisations, working with UK and foreign investors to start new enterprises, creating new jobs and supporting business investment plans. Bryn works closely alongside Harry Reece on the development and retention of new existing Client from both Shrewsbury and Chester offices.
Ben Embrey, Practice Associate: FdSC
Ben joined Base Architects in 2013 following 7 years experience with an internationally recognised Architectural Practice. Ben has a key role in supporting key members of staff within the Practice as well liaising directly with Local Authorities, Clients and Contractors to deliver viable schemes both on time and to budget. During his career he has gained extensive knowledge of design and construction on both domestic and commercial schemes through to an impressive array of educational sector work on projects totalling £50 million plus. Ben specialises in the application of technology to architecture, building design and construction. He holds a skill set which enables him to collate, organise and investigate technical information at project concept stage and during design development, delivering innovative solutions to a wide range of schemes.
Wendy Smith, Office Manager
Wendy joined Base Architects in 2004 providing support and assistance to Carl during the early stages of the company’s formation. Working closely with all members of the Practice across both the Shrewsbury and Chester offices, Wendy enables the smooth day to day running of all aspects of the office environment. Prior to working for Base Wendy has worked at a variety of Architectural Practices building a strong knowledge of all stages of the design process.
Joe Salt, Practice Associate BA (Hons), M(Arch), PGDip, MA, RIBA, MRTPI
Joe joined Base Architects in 2019 following 8 years with a local Practice and before that 5 years with an internationally recognised Architectural Practice. During his career he has gained extensive knowledge of design and construction on both domestic and commercial schemes through to an impressive array of residential projects of all sizes and educational sector work. Joe is also a Chartered Town Planner which gives him a strong understanding of current local and national planning policy and its application as the context to the built and natural environment. He has worked on numerous projects in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Green Belt, Conservation Areas, National Parks and in the open countryside. He has worked extensively with public and private stakeholders and through effective collaborative and consultation has delivered large and small scale schemes through a variety of pathways. His skill set enables him to interrogate and investigate the potential opportunities for each individual scheme and create innovative and strategic solutions to maximise the potential of every project.
James Smith, Architect BA(Hons) M(Arch) ARB
James joined Base Architects in January 2018, having previously gained 4 years architectural experience including project management, client co-ordination and architectural design. He has developed good a understanding of the various processes involved in the successful completion of a project. James believes that an emphasis on Client communication and understanding a project brief early are essential components to ensure a successful scheme, and is currently studying towards the completion of his Architectural qualification.
Chelsea Wilkes, Practice Coordinator
Chelsea joined Base Architects in 2018 providing support and assistance to the Management Team in all administrative elements of existing and upcoming projects. Chelsea liaises with clients to keep them up to date on their project progress, whilst responding to any questions or queries clients may have. Prior to Base Chelsea has developed her strong administrative skillset and coordination from working in a multitude of sectors including non-profit organisations outside of the UK. Chelsea brings a wide range of experience to her role and is enjoying furthering on her knowledge of the architectural design processes.
Emma Archer, Architectural Assistant BArch(Hons)
Emma joined Base Architects in 2019 having completed her degree at The University of Nottingham. Her degree project focused on a redevelopment proposal of a large mixed use commercial building that aimed to provide a city living plan within Milton Keynes. Having gained experience in a design setting Emma has worked on a variety of different scale projects ranging from masterplanning and residential schemes to smaller client focused commercial projects. Her passion for quality and detail ensures a rich approach to design whilst her experience of coordinating within large design teams means she understands the importance of communication which is required for every successful project.
Joe Weigh, Architectural Technologist BSc (Hons) ACIAT
Joe joined Base Architects in 2019 after successfully completing his BSc (Hons) Architectural Design Technology degree where he was awarded the CIAT Outstanding Graduating Student award from his institute. During his career Joe has gained over 10 years of onsite experience within the construction industry producing high quality domestic extensions, alterations and new builds. This practical experience has allowed him to gain an in depth understanding of how buildings are produced, from concept to completion, working closely with private clients to help them achieve their goals. Joe gained valuable experience during his studies assisting companies to produce measured surveys, feasibility studies, planning packages and building regulations packages. From his practical experience Joe has gained a high level of technological knowledge allowing him to work to a high level of technical accuracy whilst still understanding the importance of good design.
Yasmin Lokat, Architectural Designer (Part II)
Yasmin joined Base Architects in July 2019 having completed her Part 1 & 2 at The University of Westminster and the London School of Architecture. Her diploma project focused on developing innovative proposals for housing taken from concept design to construction. Having gained her experience in London based practices Yasmin has worked on a variety of different scale projects ranging from masterplan office and residential schemes, to smaller client focused projects in the commercial sector. Projects included listed buildings and conservation aspects and often within challenging urban regeneration sites, requiring a strong understanding of guiding a project through the planning process. Her passion for quality and detail ensures a rich approach to design whilst her experience of coordinating within large design teams means she understands the importance of communication which is required for every successful project.
Kieran Trow, Senior Architectural Technologist
Kieran Joined Base Architecture in January 2019 following 3 years experience within a rural practice working closely with external consultants, clients and contractors to deliver a mix of one-off builds, residential and commercial developments throughout Wales and across the border. Completion of his CIAT Accredited degree in Architectural Technology has allowed him to a attain a broad understanding of the process of BIM (Building Information Modelling) and the software packages required to deliver projects using BIM Protocols. Kieran has a Key role in implementing technology in to architecture whilst providing a practical and methodical approach to the design of projects at the early design/concept stages, planning and through to building regulations sign-off.
Jo Cunningham, Public Relations Consultant
Be Bold Media was appointed as our communications agency in 2017.Our dedicated consultant Jo Cunningham is a valued member of the wider base team, leading on our PR, digital and marketing strategies alongside directors and the senior team. Jo’s knowledge of the marketplace, alongside her enthusiasm for base projects, has resulted in coverage in many high profile national magazines including Your Home, Real Homes, Grand Designs, Homebuilding & Renovating, Self Build & Design and many more.
Jenny Powell, Business & Planning Executive
Jenny joined us in 2021 and comes with extensive experience of strategic planning, public/private partnership working and community engagement gained at several local authorities across the West Midlands. For the last three years she has worked as a project co-ordinator for a local planning consultancy and has recently completed a Master’s degree in Planning as a mature student. She has a strong understanding of local and national planning policy and possesses particular expertise in heritage, land-use planning and certificates of lawfulness. She anticipates that the opportunities on offer to her at base will enable her become a fully chartered RTPI town planner in due course. Jenny has past experience of running her own small business and prides herself on her attention to detail and excellent networking and customer service skills. She supports the senior leadership team at base as the business continues to evolve and grow.
Jake Boardman, Architect
Jake joined Base in June 2021 having gained a wide variety of sector experience over the previous seven years working within Manchester's competitive and growing commercial scene and Cheshire's flourishing private residential market. Jake has worked on an extensive portfolio of project typologies, from award-winning multi-million-pound developments working with some of the north west's biggest developers on numerous high rise residential towers, university halls of residence, office space and leisure facilities, to collaborating with private homeowner clients on their high-end residential schemes such as barn conversions and new build homes. Jake studied at Northumbria University where his creative, conceptual approach to design, with a minimalist and contemporary ethos was developed. This saw his work exhibited in New York City, USA, at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Center for Architecture, after being awarded as an exemplary project in a global competition.
Harry Braid, Architectural Assistant (Part I)
Harry achieved Part I of his Architecture qualification at the University of Wolverhampton, graduating in 2019 with an award-winning major project for a new ‘Maggie’s Centre’. His design orientated around biophilic principles and created a positive space to benefit patients undergoing treatment for cancer and their families. Since then, Harry has worked with a number of small practices in Birmingham and south Wales working on a variety of projects from smaller householder applications to larger developer schemes. He prides himself on his strong client engagement and has a particular interest in passive design and green infrastructure. Harry intends to hone his knowledge in these areas as he continues to progress through his architectural studies and develops his career at base.
Jack Harris, Architectural Designer (Part II)
Jack joined Base Architects in November 2017 having completed his Part 1 and returned in October 2020 having completed his Part 2 at Cardiff University. His diploma project focused on developing innovative sustainable housing taken from concept design through to completion. Having gained his experience at Base Architects Jack has worked on a variety of different scale projects ranging from large masterplan office and residential schemes, to bespoke residential new builds and extensions. Jack has developed a good understanding of the various processes involved in the successful completion of a project and believes a good understanding of the project brief and an emphasis on client communication is essential in successfully completing any scheme.
