Meet The Team

Carl Huntley, Managing Director: BA(Hons), DipArch(Dist), RIBA
Carl formed Base Architects in 2003 after 10 years of working for a mix of UK and International Architectural Practices. Previous experience yielded project budgets up to £3 billion and incorporated the majority of Western Europe and the UK. He specialises in sustainable Architecture, Masterplanning and challenging projects which require close attention and a sensitive Town Planning approach. Carl has grown the Practice organically, building a strong team around him that can deliver a wide range of Architectural solutions from both Shrewsbury and Chester offices.
Natasha Huntley, Director: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture
Natasha started her career in international retail, exhibition and museum design working on projects such as the Wedgwood visitor centre and the National Space Centre in Leicester. Working with worldwide brands such as Jeep and Hammonds Furniture she has also produced unique exhibition display stands for international shows. Natasha has also worked with Ray-Ban and Levi’s, creating their ‘Dockers’ brand identity including shop layout and point of sale design. Recent projects include residential remodelling and property enhancement schemes to maximise property values.
Harry Reece, Director: FdSc, ACIAT
Harry joined Base Architects in 2010 after 7 years experience with an internationally recognised Architectural Practice. Harry has extensive experience in the design and construction of both domestic and commercial schemes through to public sector work exceeding £50m + Harry’s role within the Practice is from the project enquiry / fee bidding stage of works for both Shrewsbury and Chester offices, working through the initial design, procurement, construction and Contract Administration phases. He has extensive experience in both detailed design solutions and alternative design options having worked on and managed several award winning schemes within the Practice, one of which resulted in being nominated at a national level in 2015. Harry alongside Bryn Jones leads on the development of the new Chester office which was established in 2017 to serve our growing client base. Having a strong understanding of project viability and deliver-ability, Harry is able to advise Clients on the best development routes and options on an individual scheme by scheme basis. This area of work often results in Harry regularly working with a variety of Agents, private clients and developers alike, to review options at an early stage in preparation for detailed applications. He is enthusiastic towards the challenges of each individual scheme as well as meeting the requirements of today’s evolving stringent legislation with use of modern building technologies.
Bryn Jones, Senior Associate
Bryn joined Base Architects in 2012 to support the Practice’s continued growth and is primarily responsible for project management planning and workflow allocation / monitoring. He works closely with the Design team supplying them with up to date information regarding the status of each project and newly commissioned works. Prior to joining Base Bryn has had a varied background in both the manufacturing sector and local and national Economic Development organisations, working with UK and foreign investors to start new enterprises, creating new jobs and supporting business investment plans. Bryn works closely alongside Harry Reece on the development and retention of new existing Client from both Shrewsbury and Chester offices.
Ben Embrey, Associate: FdSC
Ben joined Base Architects in 2013 following 7 years experience with an internationally recognised Architectural Practice. Ben has a key role in supporting key members of staff within the Practice as well liaising directly with Local Authorities, Clients and Contractors to deliver viable schemes both on time and to budget. During his career he has gained extensive knowledge of design and construction on both domestic and commercial schemes through to an impressive array of educational sector work on projects totalling £50 million plus. Ben specialises in the application of technology to architecture, building design and construction. He holds a skill set which enables him to collate, organise and investigate technical information at project concept stage and during design development, delivering innovative solutions to a wide range of schemes.
Wendy Smith, Office Manager
Wendy joined Base Architects in 2004 providing support and assistance to Carl during the early stages of the company’s formation. Working closely with all members of the Practice across both the Shrewsbury and Chester offices, Wendy enables the smooth day to day running of all aspects of the office environment. Prior to working for Base Wendy has worked at a variety of Architectural Practices building a strong knowledge of all stages of the design process.
David Owen, Senior Architect: BA(Hons), B Arch(Manc), MSc, MAPM, RIBA
David joined Base Architects in 2008 having previously worked in engineering and building development as well as Architecture throughout his career. Having specialised in sustainability and theatre design he has spent several years designing multi screen cinemas and large retail and leisure facilities. More recently he has been involved in Building Schools for the Future projects within the Educational sector and complex engineering schemes such as leading a multi disciplinary team designing a £35 million Turbo Jet testing facility for Rolls Royce in Derby. David employs his all round abilities and wide experience in construction in gaining challenging Planning approvals and conservation work and also leads on a number of complex care home schemes.
Jonathan Davies, Associate: BA(Hons), DipArch, RIBA
Jon joined Base Architects in 2011 from a large international firm of Architects where he headed a team operating from several offices across the UK. With over 20 years experience, he has worked on a wide variety of projects, from small domestic extensions, commercial developments and church conservation works through to large high profile national schemes. He specialises in the field of school design from advisory work in the development of ‘ideas’ and briefing documentation through design development to completion on site. Working alongside schools, Local Authorities, Contractors and other Architects he also undertakes independent scheme reviews in support of the desire to identify and deliver the best outcome for any scheme.
Corey Waters, Architect: BA(Hons), DipArch, MArch, RIBA
Corey joined Base Architects in 2017 following over 25 years of design experience working in both the UK and abroad, having most recently worked at a design orientated Practice winning 2 Civic Trust Awards for completed projects during this time. Corey undertakes a wide variety of projects from the feasibility stage through to completion of schemes on site working with a diverse client base including Local Authorities, domestic and commercial Clients, Community groups and Contractors.
Joe Groves, Architectural Technologist: BSc(Hons)
Joe joined Base Architects in 2016 following 10 years in the design department for a local residential housing developer during which time he completed his degree in Architectural Technology at Wolverhampton University, and continued on to undertake a Masters in Building Information Modelling. Joe has extensive experience with residential new build and conversion projects, alongside delivering detailed Planning Applications and Building Regulations packages for both domestic and commercial clients, and technical review and specification on interior projects
Adam Turnell, Architect & Landscape Architect: BA(Hons) M(Arch) MLA PGDip RIBA ARB CMLI
Adam joined Base Architects in 2016 following the completion of his masters in Architecture and Landscape Architecture which has enabled him to develop a holistic and integrated approach to architectural and landscape design. Having gained 3 years of experience in working in both the public and private sector Adam has worked on a wide range of schemes from education to residential, and mixed used developments working closely with both clients and contractors. Having a strong understanding of construction methods and building regulations Adam is able take a methodical and practical approach to design and construction. This approach enables a smooth transition from the initial design through to the delivery of projects on site including initial site assessment sketches, planning applications and building regulation / construction documents.
Abigail Owen, Architect: BSc(Hons) DipArch RIBA
Abigail joined Base Architects in September 2017 following over 10 years of experience in delivering a wide range of projects within the built environment. Close attention is given in providing a client focused service from inception to completion, working closely with both private individuals and commercial clients to meet individual building or development requirements. She has a wealth of experience in both city centre and rural sites, exploring all opportunities and constraints to unlock a sites potential and true value. Her strong understanding of the planning process alongside effective consultation with Local Authorities and consultees, has led to positive planning approvals on complex and challenging schemes. Abigail is experienced in all aspects of residential development from individual bespoke homes to large-scale commercial developments. She is also a Panel Member of Cheshire West and Chester Design Review Panel, providing design advice and guidance to developers and their design teams on significant developments within the borough. This role includes the careful review of pre-planning and planning applications alongside emerging plans and frameworks. Abigail is also an active member of the Cheshire Society of Architects. Abby is based primarily in our Chester office and leads on the development of the Practice alongside Harry Reece and Bryn Jones.
James Smith, Architectural Assistant: (Part II)
James joined Base Architects in January 2018, having previously gained 4 years architectural experience including project management, client co-ordination and architectural design. He has developed good a understanding of the various processes involved in the successful completion of a project. James believes that an emphasis on Client communication and understanding a project brief early are essential components to ensure a successful scheme, and is currently studying towards the completion of his Architectural qualification.
